The weather may not have fully cooperated, but that was only minor. It was quite an exciting morning as the Clarenville Connect Global 6k for Water team gathered at the Eastlink Events Centre to participate in the Global 6K for Water. The first of its kind to be hosted in Newfoundland, and certainly not the last. It was the coming together of a group of individuals in support of a greater cause. Each person wearing a bib displaying their sponsor child. Yet, even before we put on our orange shirts, pinned on our bib, and tied up our shoes, we knew this was more than just a 6K walk/run.
It was so much more. It was about Life. Change. Changing lives. It was about giving others the chance to live the life they deserve, the chance to simply live. It was about a change of perspective- to understand that even the simple things that we take for granted, like having clean water, are matters of life for others. It was about learning to never take anything for granted, to realize how blessed we truly are and to give of ourselves that others may feel this same joy.
6km. The distance children in Africa walk to get drinkable water. (not always clean, only drinkable).
6km. The distance we walked so they won’t have to anymore.
For 6k I carried 20L of water, a bit of a challenge but one worth taking. As I filled the water container the previous night I thought I was gone a little mad. But I did it. Why? Because it was a day in which we all ran from our hearts. For me that meant walking in their shoes, water and all. Lap after lap I became part of their journey and found joy in being able to share their burden. For it is not about me. It’s about giving of myself and sharing the burdens of those who are unable to carry it alone. That is where I find my joy. Giving selflessly that others may have life. Doing what I can to make a difference. And the beauty of it all is that as we give of ourselves for the benefit of others, we not only change their life, but we ourselves are changed in the process.
28 registered. Over $5400 raised. 108 children will now have access to clean water , a fresh start, and the opportunity to have life.
We all came together today for a 6k walk/run, but we left with so much more.
Run from the heart. Give selflessly. It’s who we are.
